How much detail to include, by party size
For a small, informal gathering, keep the invitation short, date, time, place, and an easy way to say yes or no is enough. For a larger party, especially one with a sit-down meal or a venue with limited capacity, it's worth being more specific: an RSVP deadline, whether kids are welcome, and any dress code or theme guests should know about in advance.
If the party is a surprise, say so clearly to whoever's "in on it," and consider keeping the invitation itself private rather than fully public, so it doesn't accidentally reach the person being surprised.
